Lost and Found

Hey Everyone,

Well I haven't gotten with you guys in a couple days because of stupid school. In case you don't know, I'm not even graduating this summer I need 3 more classes after this semester! That would be fine if I was not doing my job in school but that isn't the issue. One very good part of going to a small school is being able to have face to face relationships with your professors, but it is a small school and they don't offer the same amount of classes the large schools do. I needed 6 classes going into this "last" semester and signed up for 5 of them. I finished two during the first half at night, and had two that were supposed to be for day classes for the semester, with my final class being a night class for the second part of the term. If you haven't fallen asleep yet, I unfortunately had one class that me and only one other signed up for so they cancelled it on me. Another night class had a teacher that wouldn't work through basketball with me, so I was forced to withdraw from it. This left me with just my three classes, including just one I have left for this semester. That one class has been very easy up until now, but suddenly I have been working on a final paper that must be 15 pages! This has consumed much of my last couple days, and yes you think just because I can type a lot on here I can write quickly when actually it is a lot easier to type about everyday things no uninteresting issues such as Supply Chain Management. I have continued to work at basketball shooting and becoming bigger. Becoming bigger is not as fun as shooting a basketball. There is a major benefit to having a strength advantage over an opponent, but the work involved with gaining that advantage doesn't seem worth it at all. I worked my chest so hard it feels as if I have no arms. I am a pretty skinny guy, not terribly weak, but to gain 20 pounds feels like an impossible task. Anyone who watches the show LOST is a very smart person. This show is great, complex, and has great acting. Even though some of the storylines have become off the wall, it is still very entertaining. Lastly, I am looking into the Kentucky Developmental Basketball League to get some extra play in. It is a once a week league and it could be an interesting workout. The only issue is driving and my empty pockets. The expense might not make it worth it. Oh yeah, my profile is up on my agent's site. Google Podium Sports Agency and go to players and I will be there towards the bottom under "post players". It is a pretty cool little profile and there will be full game videos on there in the near future! It is pretty exciting for me, I am just ready to get working and get a job now!

Thank you! Getting Cut!

Hey Everyone,

First of all, I want to say thank you to everyone who is supporting me by looking at this blog! No matter who you are I appreciate it and I post everyday so keep your comments, emails and ideas coming! Also, don't forget to follow the link on the side to my youtube page and see my highlights (By the way there is a new highlight tape coming very soon). I'm excited to say 411 different viewers have viewed this site and there have already been over 1000 views in the first week in existence. I want to take this time to thank all my teammates (past and present), my family (especially Mom and Dad), my coaches, Kiley, and anyone who has supported me (you know who you are). I wouldn't be where I am today without all those people and I'm going to take a flashback today and tell you of a time long ago when I was even skinnier and uncoordinated. 1999-2001. Yes that long ago I was attending Junior High School at Lakota Ridge. I had played some basketball in elementary school and I was taller than most of the kids, but I had not put any real work into basketball yet. I had broken my arm (ok, collarbone) in football and I was an ice hockey player (yes, that is accurate) and wanted to give it up to play a sport that I thought was more appropriate for my body size and build. After recovering from the broken bone, I began going to basketball conditioning. To this day, no basketball workout program was harder. Since everyone thought they were good at basketball in the 7th grade, everyone seemed to be trying out. Actually, 48 players were trying out for the team give or take a couple. This means they were trying to weed the bad seeds out by making us run ourselves to death. We ran long distances, we ran suicides, and we ran an extremely large hill on the side of the school. Torture, cruel and unusual were all words that ran through my mind. When tryouts came everyone seemed very tired, but I pushed through and did ok. I didn't understand a lot about basketball, at least not as much as the really good players, but I had fairly decent passing skills and could make lay-ups. After surviving two cuts, I felt pretty confident that I was going to make the team, as I noticed I was one of about three big men that were still standing. I was wrong, and to save you from some really boring details, I didn't make it. I was upset, but I will give myself the credit that I faced being cut once again the next year, and still did not fold. Finally, I reached high school and I basically would be laughed at for continuing to try out for teams that I wasn't going to make. But, I did make it finally and it was all due to my resilience and my attitude to not give up on something I really wanted. I hope someone can use that as an example of how to achieve what they want out of life and it is true within reason that you can do anything. I continued on after making a team finally, to play for three great schools and now will be paid money to play a sport they once said I couldn't play.

World Team USA Select blah blah

Hey Everyone,

Well, this morning I got the first taste of competition I will see over in Europe. Well, maybe. I put in a favor to my old teammate Sam Bradley and went and ran with the guys trying out for USA Select (I think that is what it is). They were the first people that I have played with since the regular season that are trying to do exactly what I want to do, and that is play basketball professionally. USA Select is a touring team that plays teams that have already picked up their top choices and their hope is to get noticed by a team that still has a few needs here and there. It supposedly has a 50-60% rate of their players getting signed. This means the players trying out are not necessarily that great, but it beats some of the competition I get at CBU's open gym. So, I walked in and the tryout guys were already working hard in drills, missing a ton of shots and I talked to Sam before warming up. I was the tallest guy there, despite one player around 6'7" that I will get to in just a minute. Anyways, I was put on a team with a bunch of other guys that came to help out and a couple didn't play past high school. Wow, this was going to be ugly. First, when you go into a situation with basketball players that have less experience than you, it is easy to get annoyed. Secondly, when your on a team full of guards, good luck getting the ball if you are a big man. Unfortunately, I am a big man. I watched 3 pointers get hurled from all over the court and our makeshift team lost the first 20 minute session 31-8. Yes, I had four points in that span taking all of 3 shots and 2 of those were offensive rebounds. The guy who was guarding me who was 6'7", was a pretty decent player. He was a big school D1 player who had experienced the Big 12 and the Big 10. He didn't get off the bench a lot at either of those schools. He has a lot of strength but after I figured out the refs were not really calling 3 in the key (standing in the lane for more than 3 seconds for you knuckleheads) I had no issues with burying him and sticking some dunks in on him. So, the rest of the day I spent my time yelling at 6 foot tall men to pass it into their taller teammate. They finally began to listen and we won a couple sessions. Overall, knowing this isn't going to be really close to the competition I will play next year I would say I did ok. I honestly scored a lot, but I can't get too excited doing well at something like that. In other news, went to a "concert" last night, well Sofapalooza. It is where a bunch of bands come to this little known school (CBU) and play for a huge crowd of about 200. It wasn't bad though, even if Al Kapone was there and didn't even do his own songs, but I have no room to complain. I'm trying to figure out ways to make my site cooler, so if anyone has any suggestions and or requests I am glad to take them. I have Zelda at the bottom, and it is basically impossible to win so your not alone if you can't beat the first level. Don't forget to check out my youtube page and subscribe! The link is on the side! DO IT!

Brothers Dinner and Three Point Shots

Hey Everyone,

Once again, a post in the middle of the night for all you normal people! Me, the weirdo, is still up and kicking it. I had a strange run in with a cop at a park tonight, not going to go into detail, but there was not ticket involved even though my shirt was off. I'll leave that one to the imagination. In other exciting news, the Brother's Dinner was tonight. I don't know why I capitalized that like it is some event or something, it really is just a dinner with a bunch of Brothers at it. No! I am not talking about black guys you are all retarded, brothers are the men of God at my catholic college. They are very similar to priests in the fact that they don't get married, give their life to God, and really I don't know the difference between the two. Anyways, they host a dinner for athletes after each season ends and we are required to attend. Now, I don't want to slam the brothers too hard because I appreciate them, they are always at our games and probably are our biggest fans, but why do they want to cook us dinner to thank us? They support us not the other way around. On top of that, I'm not in love with food they cook but they show us a good time and obviously recognition is also appreciated. So, thank you Brothers! Basketball wise, my jump shot and it's inconsistency is really starting to get on my nerves. If you know how I play, you know I am not a good three point shooter. Well, in reality I am better than the average joe just not better than most of my team who happens to be filled with strangely good shooters like Kyle Couvion, Kevin Doran, Jimmy Palmer, and Zack Warner. And that is not to mention all the good shooters who have graduated recently from CBU. I have been working very hard to extend my range nonetheless, and honestly I do have some good days shooting. I'm sure everyone gets annoyed with me shooting countless threes in open gym because I need the practice, but they can bear with me, I helped them get Elite 8 rings. Anyways, I will have a good day and make 5 or 6 three point shots, and then turn around and only make 1 or 2. This would be fine if I wasn't shooting a similar amount everyday. I practice a lot now on my own and they go in all the time without defense, but in games it is a different story. Anyone with suggestions on how to simulate defense while shooting alone please send those comments my way because I am clueless. Anyone who feels my pain (ok just being dramatic now) . Really though, I'll be back at it everyday until it is consistent, but the part in between just isn't my thing!

Yes, A Decision Has Been Made!

Hey Everyone,

Well, today was a big day for me. If you read my first post ever, you know that I was struggling to decide whether I should wait to sign with a loyal agent or fish around and use as many agents as I can until one of them gets me my dream job. Well the latter has now seemed like more of a terrible idea the more I think about it for about two big reasons. BIG (yes I capitalized it) REASON #1: Any agent that doesn't suggest I sign with anyone is most likely worried that I am going to sign with a bigger and better agent. BIG REASON #2: Any agent that is worth a damn is obviously going to want me to sign with them because they are not going to do all this work for me without the promise I am going to benefit them in some way, also pointing out that only the weaker and desperate agents are doing all this work for me for free. This lead me to then take my top candidates, who I will not name here for respect reasons, and I wanted to look at players they currently have and where they are playing, who they played for, and what kind of money they make. I also wanted to sign with an agent who had a decent amount of clients but not too many that I won't ever hear from them. Finally, I wanted to feel that they were honest but also confident in my abilities. The closest to having it all fell on one man from 123 Podium Sports by the name of Elliot Kay. He is a law degree holder and also has had many years of experience as an agent. The complete package he offers which includes career planning, financial management, and contract services were more than I have heard from any agent up to this point. On top of that, a player he has worked with Omari Peterkin, gave me a lot of inside information on him and had all good things to say. By the way Omari Peterkin is one of the best players in Bosnia D1 League and averages a double double, also showing me that Elliot signs quality players. Now, the contract sits in front of me and if my lawyer (AKA Kiley's stepdad) says it looks A-OK I will be the next client in 123 Podium's family. Hopefully, it will be a longstanding good relationship and will lead me to great things! That takes a lot of work from me as well. I have been playing basketball more than I ever have before. Practicing on a team for two hours goes by really fast and it is fun to play 5 on 5 drills and work with other people. Shooting alone for 3-5 hours everyday is not as fun as it sounds. I love basketball no doubt, but doing something alone for that long is draining and not easy at all! Then I have to lift for an hour (should be more), and finally I get to go for a jog around the school grounds. This jog is known as the "Buc Lap", I guess because the school mascot is a Buccaneer hence the "Buc" and the lap is for running all the way around the school's property once. Before you say, "holy shit you ran all the way around your whole college campus" please remember that my school is tiny and has about 4 total buildings including the gym. That means a run around the whole school is only about 1.7 miles. This is a short distance for a cross country runner, but it is a haul for a lazy basketball player. I have not made it the whole way running at a quick pace once! When I run it at a slow pace I feel like I can make it but I am running slow because I take my girlfriend Kiley with me and she can't make it! This leads me to having a career number of zero completed "Buc Laps". Well, maybe tomorrow!

Late Night Post, Dedication to Grace

Hey Everyone,

This post is coming at about 1:55 AM Central Time, which is late for most people, but not for me because I am a well, nightowl! I actually inherited that from my mother, my dad is a Nazi when it comes to people getting enough sleep, going to bed at a reasonable time, and just about anything to do with sleep. The only time he stays up past 9 pm is on the weekends when he drinks a couple beers, but he will be lucky to not be passed out in his favorite chair by 11 pm! Anyway, I wanted to take this post to talk a little about a person who is important to me and deserves a big mention and rarely gets it. Grace is my daughter, yes I am a Dad, and let's get this straight I am not a very good one. She is a very pretty, sweet, funny, and outgoing little girl. Unfortunately, I chose basketball as a career (for now) and I had to go to college away from where she lives to get to the point I am at now. So, once again I am going to have to disappoint her and be away for long periods of time. She is only four years old (just turned 4/14) and she doesn't understand the big picture yet, she really thinks it is just a vacation when her Dad comes and sees her. But, hopefully she can read this someday and know that I do love her and will be better. She deserves it! Don't worry though, she is well taken care of despite my shortcomings as a father! I just wanted to give her a big shout out with this post! Hope everyone is enjoying their sleep!

Memphis Food vs. Cincinnati Food (Walk Ons too)

Hey Everyone,

Just getting back in and posting while I work on Cha Cha, sometimes questions are nonstop sometimes I don't get a question for minutes! Which sucks considering the small amount of money I receive per question I send through. But, at least it gives me time to write this! Lucky you! Well, I'm in after working out today and playing open gym with the returning team at Christian Brothers. Now that I am a "graduate" (actually not quite yet) I am now subjected to playing on the team with other people who have graduated, walk-ons and people trying out for the team for next year. Ok, if it is someone trying out for the team and has a shot at a scholarship they are usually pretty manageable and decent players, but a lot of times people trying out to be walk-ons that already attend a school as small as Christian Brothers and are under 6 feet tall are usually way out of their league. People think that NCAA division 2 can't be that great because it is a second division. This isn't true especially for CBU a team that has been a contender in a tough South Region for three straight years. We have played a 5 point game with Ohio University and played close with Murray State. Yes, we do get beat pretty badly by Memphis pretty much every year, but that might not be true anymore with the departure of John Calipari, and many D2 teams knock off mid to low D1 teams every single year in games that are always played on the D1 team's court. Michigan State has lost to Grand Valley State, who we only lost to by 8 points that same year, Findlay beat Ohio State last year and also played Xavier to a three point game this year. We were in the Elite 8 this year with Findlay. So, before you tryout for a D2 team and think you belong just because you can outplay your other underskilled friends on the playground on Saturdays, think again. PLEASE! Well, now that I set up this story with that wonderfully rude backstory today I was on a pretty decent team and we finally won a game against the returning starters (for the most part) after losing the previous two attempts and I felt we would finally start to gain some momentum and my shots were all going in. Then, the great Coach Nienaber decided to make an appearance and gave a player who was crucial to our win to the already "stacked" team and then placed a current student that wants to try out on our team. Wow. Appreciated that loving gift from the Coach I had given so many wins to and this is how he repays me. This guy walked into a situation he was not ready for. Standing at about 5'7" he had to guard Kyle Couvion the best returning guard for CBU who is known to regularly pick the pockets of star guards on GSC teams. So, I will give you one guess as to what happened with this poor guy? He turned the ball over to Couvion about one out of every two possessions and in turn got yelled at me about every possession! Yes, I know it is just an open gym and I should not be so competitive but I have to weed out all these commuters that lose me basketball games, its one of my rules on life. Ok, so I went a little too far I know I apologize to all those tryout guys out there reading this and thinking I'm an asshole, but I have to ask you, "isn't playing with your boys on the weekends good enough?" Well, I'm sure I will get paid back when I try out with professional teams and the players are like "Oh no, not another tall slow white guy!" On other notes, I have been thinking about what food I am going to miss so much during my time to come overseas and it is kind of depressing. When I first came to school in Memphis and left Cincinnati I had enough problems with this, but I was only eight hours away from Skyline, Chipotle, and my Mom's cooking. Now, I will have many countries, states and an ocean between me and my favorite foods. Ok, so maybe I don't need to be eating Skyline or Chipotle so regularly but who can resist the wonderful smooth Skyline chili over crispy french fries or a hot dog and always topped with a nice sized pile of american shredded cheese, or a overstuffed burrito with yummy steak and sour cream (along with some other condiments). I know everyone who loves the food in their current or a past city knows exactly how I feel. On the other side of things, I really won't miss a lot of food in Memphis. They are pretty much only known for their barbeque which isn't even that great. I do like barbeque nachos at Central BBQ near my current apartment, but I don't even visit often and I am within walking distance. Anyways, I am a picky eater and seeing me in another country trying to adjust to their cuisine. I just hope their toilets are ready for Nick Kohs!

Agents, Formals, and Cha Cha

Hey Everyone,

Well, this post was going to come late night last night, but my girlfriend was summoning me to bed and I didn't want to get yelled at! Guys, you know the deal. Anyways, the last couple of days have been really busy. I have continued to contemplate whether or not to sign with an agent and I am leaning towards signing with one now and letting them do all my work, instead of spreading it out. I want someone who is honest and trustworthy. Not to name name's there is a favorite right now, and our talks have gone very well. Of course, with my luck the man who seems the most trustworthy is also the one who is telling me that he expects me to make the least amount of money comparatively with all the other agents I have spoken with. I guess this really proves his honesty, at my expense, but no worries the decision will be made very soon though! This Saturday night was the ZETA sorority formal. Yes, I said formal as in formal dance, dress up and get down. Even though I am a big soon to be pro basketball player (very laughable I know), my girlfriend is a ZETA rabbit and this means I am required to be at this said formal(ity). Anyways, after she got her dress a month in advance I was left with that amount of time to purchase a tie that was the exact color of the dress or be punished by death. I fought with much valor, but her having long hair, long legs and a hairless body pushed her over the top. So, I wait until the day of to go find this tie, and while I am out she is getting her hair done. Well, I visit many stores and finally get the tie I think will match more like pray it will match and I get a call for my girlfriend. She didn't like her hair so she pulled the whole thing out and decided to do it on her own! When girls don't like their hair for these dances you need to beware, because this will lead to a mood that many men don't like to see. Her hair turned out good to me, but what do I know I like her hair in a ponytail, I don't think she was as happy about it as I was. Long story short, I survived the formal and it was actually fun, the food was pretty good, and the music was slowish rap, so I could actually keep up with it (wink wink). On to money talk, I have signed on with Cha Cha your neighborhood search engine to be a guide. I can work as many hours (or as little) as I want and I am going to make a staggering amount of money! Not! Oh well, I may be on my way to making money playing basketball, but I have a summer to survive with no job considering I plan on playing basketball around four hours a day in the summer. I also am making money by advertising on this very page, so don't mind those, I'll take anything I can get for now! Anyways, Cha Cha guides get questions from text messages and I am the person who makes sure the questions are understandable and passes them to the people who have to answer them. This leads me to having to see every kind of question that gets asked and wow people out there are crazy. Every kind of sexual advance has been made on me and every single sex position has been listed, on top of that people don't know how to spell anything! Who spells problem as problim? Yes that has happened 4 times. I don't know what age people are getting cell phones these days, but I figured you would have to be old enough to be able to spell simple words actually a lot of words! Oh well, that is what is going with me right now don't forget to check out my youtube page, thanks!

Welcome to my Journey!

Hey everyone,

I'm new to this blog thing but I thought I would give it a try! My main purpose in writing this is to share my experiences from start to finish of playing basketball professionally overseas. This may help anyone else who wants to play and follow that path in the future, it can share what life is like for an American in another country, or it may be just for my family who won't get to speak to me as much. Anyways, let me give you a little background of where I am at now. First of all, my name is Nick Kohs (I think I forgot to mention that) and I am a man with a great family, great girlfriend (Kiley), and great friends. I am also a senior basketball player (and student I guess) at Christian Brothers University (NCAA D2). Don't bother trying to figure out what school that is because you probably won't unless you A.) Live in Memphis, TN; B) Go to school at CBU; or C) Already have heard about CBU from someone else who goes there and you wondered about it then to get no answers. Well, it is a really tiny school, but it does have a pretty good basketball team that reached the Elite 8 in the 2008-2009 season. I fortunately, got to play on that great team as the center (I'm 6'8" by the way) and was very successful individually as well. I was a Gulf South Conference Player of the Year and a South Region Player of the Year as well as being named a 1st Team All American. That is actually all well and dandy while you are in college, but this is where the story really starts that I want to share. Now, I'm trying to play professionally. You might say, "Hey you had a good career from the sounds of it what is the problem?" Well, the problem is I got those awards playing at a D2 school! Duh! You've never heard of it, so nobody else has! Anyways, I am going a little overboard, I have been contacted by many agents at home and overseas, but deciding which agent to trust is no easy thing. They all tell me a lot of good things and a lot of different things, some say I could and should play in the NBDL, while others say overseas is the place for me. Now me being a realistic guy knows to weed out anyone who is pushing the NBDL, because the only reason to go there would be if there is a realistic chance of being called up to the NBA! And I am a 6'8" white guy who played NCAA 2, so realistically my chances of the NBA are zero! I'm not saying they aren't better than 90% of the world but I don't match up so well with the small percentage that is currently in the NBA. Ok so I'm a little off topic. Pretty much right now I have a decision to make and maybe you can all give me some advice. The question is do I sign with an agent now, or wait around for an agent to get me a job offer and then sign with them. Now the upside of signing with an agent now is that the bigger agencies expect you to sign with them before they work for you, but this also means they don't have to work as hard after they have you, plus they usually have a lot of players so they have less time for you. These big agencies do have the big reputation and the most contacts, but if you sign early and they don't get you a good deal, you are left with nowhere to go and no options. Ok, the other side of the coin is not signing and dealing with smaller agents, but hardworking agents that are going to call you back right away and treat you like family. They may have less contacts and get you less money but they service you harder. Now, the downside of doing this is the fact that yes you may make less money and also if you wait around and nobody finds you a good job while you work with many agents then you are really stuck because they could move on whenever they want and leave you with nothing. Also, when teams get game tapes from more than one agent it can hurt your credibility and you can look disloyal which is never good in business. So, what do you think? Thanks for making my first post a successful one!

PS. I put some highlight tapes on youtube using Windows Movie Maker, tell me what you think, I am trying to get it right I am going to keep trying to make better ones! But, you can see how I play! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhuPCPNU7Uc
